John Carey is the Director of Recreation and Facilities at Penn State Altoona. In his current position, Carey oversees the wide variety of intramural sports offerings, men’s and women’s club sports, and the day-to-day operations of the Adler Athletic Complex. Additionally, he became the head coach of the women's bowling program prior to the start of the 2018-19 season.
Carey is a native of Altoona. He graduated from Altoona Area High School in 1998 before attending York College of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management. In 2009, he earned his Masters Degree in Sport Management, with a special emphasis in Intercollegiate Athletics, from California University of Pennsylvania.
Prior to joining Penn State Altoona, Carey worked for the Central Blair Recreation Commission in Altoona, where he managed youth and adult recreation programs. He still remains very active in the local sports scene, serving as both coach and player.
Carey resides in Altoona with his wife, Lyndsey, and sons Kadyn and Jonah.
