ALTOONA, Pa. - Two second half goals pushed Waynesburg University past the Penn State Altoona women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, as the Yellow Jackets prevailed 3-1 at Spring Run Stadium.
Penn State Altoona (1-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead at 20:16 on Shoshana Mahoney's (Sweet Valley, PA/Lake-Lehman) second goal of the season. Mara Brackett (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) earned her first collegiate assist on the score, as she sent a ball down the middle of the field to Mahoney, who collected the pass near the edge of the box and chipped a shot past the goalkeeper.
But Waynesburg (1-1) capitalized on a foul in the penalty box just under 17 minutes later, as Teagan Jenner converted on a penalty kick at 37:08 to make it 1-1.
The score remained tied at one goal apiece until midway through the second half, when Waynesburg found the go-ahead tally. Emily Hill set up Jill Moyer with a pass in front of the net, and Golonka beat the goalkeeper from five yards out to put the visitors up 2-1 at 70:53.
Waynesburg added an insurance goal at 79:40, when Nikki Davis headed Sara Hackman's well-placed pass into the net to make it 3-1.
Waynesburg held a 21-9 advantage in total shots, including a 13-7 lead in shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets also led 4-1 in corner kicks.
Sydney Emershaw (Dallas, PA/Dallas) made a career-high 10 saves for Penn State Altoona in the loss. Mahoney led the team with three total shots, and Gabby Stauffer (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Central Catholic) had a team-high two shots on goal.
The Lady Lions hit the road for their next contest, traveling to face non-conference opponent Westminster College on Wednesday, September 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Notes: With her goal today, Mahoney moved into sole possession of fourth place on the Penn State Altoona women's soccer all-time goals scored list. Mahoney has scored 22 career goals.
