Defense Propels Men’s Basketball to 90-68 Win at Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team improved to 4-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference on Saturday afternoon, when a strong defensive effort helped lead the Lions to a 90-68 victory over league opponent Alfred State College in the Orvis Gymnasium.

Penn State Altoona (8-6, 4-1 AMCC) built a 15-point lead by halftime, holding Alfred State (2-12, 1-4 AMCC) to 28 points in the opening period. The Lions outscored the Pioneers 47-40 in the second half and finished the game with totals of 16 steals and 22 turnovers forced.

"Always happy to get any conference road win. Everyone knows you and usually plays well at home. Although this afternoon we came out a little sluggish, our defensive effort in the first half really helped us set the tone," said Penn State Altoona head coach David McGreal. "In the second half, we shored up on our turnovers and limited their second chance opportunities, and that's why we were able to build the lead, along with turning them over and converting those into easy baskets."

The Lions' Kal-El Gentles (Austin, TX/San Juan Diego) led all scorers in the game with a season-high 25 points to go along with five rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Gentles' point total was helped by a 5-for-7 performance from three-point range.

Dwayne Jones (Philadelphia, PA/Greater Johnstown) had 15 points while leading all players in the game in both rebounds and assists, totaling seven boards and six helpers. Nehemiah Frye (King George, VA/King George) scored 14 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor, and Jalen Martinez (Brooklyn, NY/New Hope Academy) contributed 10 points off the bench.

Alfred State was led in scoring by Ty Gustafson, who finished with 12 points for the Pioneers. Joseph Bauer added 10 points for the home team.

Penn State Altoona started its scoring in the first half with a trio of early baskets by Frye, helping the Lions to a 6-4 lead three minutes in. A three-pointer from Gentles and a pair of foul shots from Jones gave the visitors an 11-8 lead by 13:21, before an Abiah Charles (Orlando, FL/Wekiva) layup and Michael Baskerville (Damascus, MD/Damascus) trifecta extended it to 16-8 by 12:09.

Alfred State worked its way back to within three points, 20-17, by the 8:56 mark, after getting a pair of three-pointers by Darius Cunningham and a layup from Jacob Gonzalez. But Penn State Altoona outscored the Pioneers by a commanding margin over the remainder of the first half, putting 23 points on the board to Alfred State's 11.

A streak of 10 straight points by Gentles helped the Lions to a 33-19 advantage by the 4:45 mark, and a layup from Jones and free throws from Kaden Claar (Portage, PA/Portage) put Penn State Altoona's lead at 37-24 just over a minute later. The Lions got four more points from Gentles and a jumper from Charles to go into halftime with a 43-28 lead.

Penn State Altoona continued to click offensively in the second half. Three straight layups by Jones preceded buckets from Frye and Gentles, increasing the Lions' lead to 53-32. Later, Claar hit from three-point range to make it 60-34, and layups from Jones and Frye gave Penn State Altoona its largest lead of the day, 64-34, by the 14:19 mark. The Lions maintained their strong lead over the Pioneers the rest of the game to seal a 22-point conference win.

Penn State Altoona finished the contest with significant scoring advantages over Alfred State in points off turnovers (28-9), points in the paint (56-40), and fastbreak points (20-8). The Lions shot 50.0 percent as a team.

"Now, we've got to go out and get ready for another road test Wednesday, as we get ready for the Celtics over at Carlow," said McGreal. "Go Lions!"

Penn State Altoona men's basketball travels to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, January 15, to face AMCC opponent Carlow University at 7 p.m.
