Men’s Golf Takes Seventh at Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic

CRESSON, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's golf wrapped up its first tournament of the 2024-25 season on Saturday, competing in the second and final day of the Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic.

Saturday's round saw play shift to Summit Country Club, where the Lions shot 310 as a team. Penn State Altoona's two-day score of 617 placed it seventh out of 20 teams by the conclusion of the tournament.

Farmingdale State College won the tournament with a two-round score of 601, while Heidelberg University and Mount Aloysius College tied for second place with 608.

Penn State Altoona's 'A' squad saw three of its golfers finish among the top 20 places on the player leaderboard.

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) and Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) both tied for ninth place individually with matching two-round scores of 150. Nusbaum duplicated his score from Friday's round, shooting a 3-over-par 75, while Riscica carded a 5-over-par 77 on Saturday. Meanwhile, Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) shot 4-over on Saturday, with his 76 giving him a two-day score of 153 to tie for 18th place.

Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) and Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) rounded out the 'A' team, with Bruce scoring 82 on Saturday to total 170 and Ankeny shooting 89 to compile a score of 171.

The Lions' 'B' squad finished in 11th place on the team leaderboard. The unit shot 320 in Saturday's round, finishing with a two-day score of 636.

Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) had the top score on the 'B' squad during Saturday's play, firing a 78 to finish with a two-day score of 160, placing him in a tie for 43rd place individually. Joey Sabol (State College, PA/State College) was the top finisher of the group, tying for 21st place after he carded a 79 on Saturday to compile a two-round score of 154.

Roger Royer (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg Community) tied for 47th place, shooting 83 on Saturday to combine for a score of 161. Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) both tied for 64th with total scores of 166. Batrus shot 80 on Saturday, while Phillips earned an 85.

Penn State Altoona's 'C' team took 15th place, shooting 334 on Saturday to total 656 in the tournament.

Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) was the top finisher on the 'C' team, as he tied for 39th place individually after shooting 79 in Saturday's round, giving him a two-day score of 159. Samuel Sharbaugh (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) tied for 60th, shooting an 87 on Saturday for a combined score of 164.

Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) and Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) both totaled scores of 167 through the tournament, with McCullough earning an 83 on Saturday and Samangy scoring 85. Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) finished with a 90 in Saturday's round, posting a combined score of 173.

Luke Repko (Cresson, PA/Bishop Carroll), Penn State Altoona's individual entry into the tournament, shot 83 in Saturday's round to total 172 across two days.

Penn State Altoona men's golf returns to action next week, when the Lions will compete in The Gauntlet, presented by Premier Collegiate Tournaments. The two-day tournament goes from Sunday, September 15 to Monday, September 16 and is held at Bucknell Golf Club in Lewisburg.
