Men’s Golf Shoots School Record, Finishes Second at The Gauntlet

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team finished as the runner-up out of 14 teams in The Gauntlet, as the Lions shot a school-record 287 during the second and final day of the tournament at Bucknell Golf Club on Monday.

Penn State Altoona compiled a team score of 287 in Monday's round, setting a new program record for the lowest team round in Lions history. The team totaled 576 across the two-day tournament, finishing in second place.

Gettysburg College won The Gauntlet with 568, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute placed third with 579.

Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) was Penn State Altoona's top finisher, tying for fourth place on the player leaderboard out of 75 individuals. Riscica compiled a two-round score of 140, including shooting 1-under par in Monday's round. His score of 69 is the third lowest in a round by a Lions player in team history.

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) tied for sixth place, shooting 1-over, 71, to finish with a two-day score of 141. Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) fired an even-par 70 on Monday, coming in a tie for ninth place with a total score of 144.

Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) tied for 44th place, carding 77 on Monday to total 153 strokes in two days. Joey Sabol (State College, PA/State College) tied for 63rd place, scoring 78 on Monday to finish with a two-day score of 159.

Meanwhile, Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) and Roger Royer (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg Community) both wrapped up the tournament as individual competitors. Ellis shot 2-over par with a 72 on Monday, totaling 157 to tie for 57th place. Royer scored 79 on Monday, earning a two-day score of 164 to take 71st place.

Penn State Altoona men's golf returns to action tomorrow, Tuesday, September 17, to compete in the fourth annual Hite Cup, the Lions' yearly round of match play against non-conference opponent Westminster College. This year's edition of the Hite Cup will take place at Omni Bedford Springs Resort in Bedford, Pa., with the start time set for 1 p.m.
