Men’s Golf Finishes Fourth at Region V Showcase
WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team ascended the team leaderboard on the second and final day of this weekend's NCAA Region V Showcase, moving up to finish in fourth place out 22 teams after Sunday's round at Manakiki Golf Course.
Beginning the day in sixth place, Penn State Altoona shot 295 as a team during Sunday's round to move two spots up and finish the tournament in fourth with a two-day score of 605. The Lions' 295 is tied for the fifth-lowest score in a round in team history.
Trine University won the tournament with a two-round score of 587, John Carroll University was the runner-up with 597, and Denison University placed third with 598.
Penn State Altoona finished ahead of several Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponents who competed in the Showcase, placing ahead of Mount Aloysius College (eighth place, 618), Pitt-Greensburg (tied for ninth place, 620), Pitt-Bradford (16th place, 640), Penn State Behrend (20th place, 696), and Carlow University (22nd place, 748).
Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) had Penn State Altoona's low score of Sunday's round, shooting an even-par 72 to finish with a two-day score of 159, finishing in a tie for 61st place out of 127 individuals. Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) and Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) both shot 1-over par, carding a 73 in round two. Riscica totaled 148 across two days to end the weekend as Penn State Altoona's top finisher, tying for sixth place individually. Nusbaum tied for 31st place on the player leaderboard with a total score of 155.
Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) tied for 13th place at the tournament's end, after shooting 77 on Sunday to finish with a two-day score of 151. Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) tied for 46th place, firing a 78 on Sunday and recording a two-round score of 157.
Penn State Altoona's 'B' team came in 17th place after Sunday's round, shooting 316 to finish with a combined score of 642.
Joey Sabol (State College, PA/State College) was the top finisher on the 'B' squad, tying for 19th place individually after shooting 2-over par on Sunday to total 153 across two rounds. Roger Royer (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg Community) tied for 55th place, after he carded 77 on Sunday and compiled a total score of 158.
Samuel Sharbaugh (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) scored 159 in two rounds, including shooting 4-over par on Sunday with a 76, to tie for 61st place individually. Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) scored 89 on Sunday, totaling 177 in two day to tie for 116th.
Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) competed as an individual again in Sunday's round and shot 81. His two-day score of 163 put him in a tie for 80th place.
Penn State Altoona men's golf gets back to play next Saturday, September 28, and Sunday, September 29, when the Lions will co-host The Northeast Elite with Penn College. The tournament is held at Williamsport Country Club in Williamsport, Pa.
