Men’s Golf Starts PA Classic in Second Place

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team resumed its 2024-25 schedule on Saturday, competing in its first round of the spring semester while hosting day one of the Pennsylvania Classic at Penn State's Blue Course.

The Lions shot 300 as a team on the par 72 course, finishing the day in second place out of 17 squads. Allegheny College held the top spot on the team leaderboard with 292, while Washington & Jefferson College and Westminster College were tied for third place with 303.

Penn State Altoona also ranked atop the standings in the Penn State Division III Challenge, a competition within the tournament for the participating Penn State Division III teams. The Lions' 300 outranked Penn College (313), Penn State Harrisburg (327), and Penn State Abington (346).

For the Lions' 'A' team, Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) led the way by shooting 1-over par, tying for sixth place individually out of 96 golfers with his score of 73. Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) was 2-over par on the day, tying for 13th place with 74.

Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) shot 75 to finish the round in 18th place individually, Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) carded a 78 to tie for 38th, and Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) rounded out the starting lineup with an 83 that tied for 63rd place.

Meanwhile, the Penn State Altoona 'B' team ended Saturday's round in ninth place with a team score of 310.

Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) and Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) had the 'B' squad's low round, as each player shot 3-over par to tie for 18th place individually with their matching scores of 75.

Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) scored 79 to tie for 44th place by the round's conclusion. Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) carded an 81 to tie for 53rd, and Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) shot 87 to tie for 77th.

Two additional Lion golfers competed as individuals, as Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) shot 81 to tie for 53rd place and Luke Repko (Cresson, PA/Bishop Carroll) carded an 85 to tie for 69th place.

The second and final day of this weekend's Pennsylvania Classic is tomorrow, Sunday, March 30, with play for the men's tournament continuing on the Blue Course.
