Lions Take Seventh at Caschera Classic
CHARDON, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team wrapped up its 2024-25 regular season schedule on Monday, when the Lions competed in the second and final day of the Dan Caschera Classic, hosted by John Carroll University at Sand Ridge Golf Club.
On the par 72 course, Penn State Altoona shot 318 in Monday's round to finish with a two-day score of 623 that put the Lions in seventh place out of 13 teams.
Kenyon College won the tournament by seven shots, compiling a two-round score of 584. Host school John Carroll was the runner-up with 591, Trine University came in third place with 603, and Denison University and Wittenberg University tied for fourth with 607.
Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) had the Lions' low round on Monday and was also Penn State Altoona's top individual finisher in the tournament. Bruce shot 7-over par in Monday's round, scoring a 77 to finish with a two-day score of 151 to come in 18th place out of 78 individuals.
Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) tied for 19th place individually with a two-round score of 152, including his 82 in Monday's action. Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) tied for 46th on the player leaderboard with 159, after he carded a 78 on Monday.
Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) shot 81 in round two, totaling 161 strokes for the tournament to tie for 50th place. Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) finished in 78th place with a combined score of 176, including shooting 87 on Monday.
The Lions' individual competitor, Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North), tied for 42nd place individually with a two-round score of 158 after he shot 78 in Monday's action.
Now, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team will prepare for its eighth NCAA postseason berth in program history, which comes by virtue of the Lions winning their ninth-ever Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title last October. The team will travel to the Rochester, N.Y., area in mid-May to compete in the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship, which is hosted at Midvale Country Club in Penfield, N.Y.
Rounds one of the Division III Championship is set for Tuesday, May 20.
