Men’s Golf Tied for 36th after First Round of NCAA Championship
VICTOR, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team teed off its eighth-ever NCAA postseason appearance on Tuesday afternoon, when the Lions competed in day one of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship.
Penn State Altoona opened the tournament at Cobblestone Creek Country Club for round one, where the Lions shot 316 as a team on the par 72 course to finish the day in a tie for 36th place out of 43 teams.
Illinois Wesleyan University ended the round in first place with a score of 290, while John Carroll University and Carleton College were in a tie for second with 294. Aurora University held fourth place with 295.
Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) was Penn State Altoona's top performer in day one, firing a 2-over par 74 to end the round in a tie for 31st place out of 225 individuals. Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) was in a tie for 152nd by the conclusion of Tuesday's round, after he shot 80 on the day.
Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) both scored 81 to finish the round in a tie for 167th place, and Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) rounded out the Lions' lineup by shooting 88 to end the day in a tie for 219th.
The Lions will head to Midvale Country Club in Penfield, N.Y., for day two of the tournament tomorrow, Wednesday, May 21. Due to expected rain and inclement weather conditions, Wednesday's round has been reorganized into a shotgun start, which is expected to get underway at approximately 8 a.m.
After Wednesday's action is complete, the 43-team field will be trimmed down to the top 18 teams, who will advance in the tournament and continue play over the remainder of the week.
