Men’s Golf Ties for 28th in NCAA Tourney

PENFIELD, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team's 2024-25 season came to a close on Wednesday, when the Lions finished in a tie for 28th place by the end of day two of the NCAA Division III Championship.

Penn State Altoona shot 310 in Wednesday's round, where play shifted to the par-72 Midvale Country Club. The Lions totaled 626 strokes in two days to tie for 28th place out of 43 teams, representing the team's highest-ever finish in an NCAA postseason tournament.

After day two, the top 18 squads on the team leaderboard make the cut to advance to the next rounds of the tournament this week, while the remaining teams are eliminated. Leading the pack through two days was Illinois Wesleyan University, which had a two-round score of 595. Kenyon College and Huntingdon College were tied for second with 597, and Carnegie Mellon University was fourth with 598.

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) had the Lions' best score of Wednesday's round and was also Penn State Altoona's top finisher in the tournament. Nusbaum shot 4-over par, 76, on Wednesday to total 156 strokes across two days and tie for 107th place out of 225 individuals.

Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) tied for 137th place, after he was 5-over par, 77, in day two to tally a combined score of 158.

Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) and Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) both tied for 148th place with matching two-round scores of 159. Bruce carded a 78 on Wednesday, while Riscica shot 85.

Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) shaved nine strokes off of his first-round score to shoot 79 on Wednesday, totaling 167 in two days and tying for 195th place individually.

Penn State Altoona men's golf earned its berth to the NCAA postseason – which was its eighth in program history – thanks to winning the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference last October for the ninth time.
