Men’s Golf Opens Season at Denison, Bradford Tournaments
GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team teed off its 2025-26 campaign on the road Saturday with split-squad action.
Penn State Altoona's 'A' team golfed in day one of the Ted Barclay Invitational, hosted by Denison University at Denison Golf Club. The Lions finished round one of the two-day tournament in eighth place out of 11 teams with a score of 303.
Meanwhile, the Lions sent their 'B' and 'C' squads to compete in the Pitt-Bradford Invitational at the Pennhills Club in Bradford. The 'B' team shot 314 to finish in fourth place out of 15, and the 'C' team scored 330 to tie for 11th place.
Ted Barclay Invitational, Day One
Penn State Altoona shot 18-over as a team in Saturday's round of the Denison tournament, scoring 303 as a unit on the par 71 course.
John Carroll University ended the day in first place with 287, while Denison, Otterbein University, and Wittenberg University were in a three-way logjam for second place with 294.
Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) had Penn State Altoona's low round, shooting 1-over par to tie for sixth place out of 67 individuals with his score of 72. Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) ended the round in a tie for 21st place after carding a 4-over 75.
Joey Sabol (State College, PA/State College) finished the round in a tie for 28th place after shooting 5-over par, 76, and Arthur Franciosa Jr. (Purchase, NY/Harrison) was in a tie for 44th place with a 79. Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) rounded out Penn State Altoona's starting lineup with an 85, tying for 62nd place individually by the day's end.
Additionally, two other Lions competed as individuals. Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) found himself in a tie for 28th place by the conclusion of the round, after he shot a 5-over par 76. Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) was tied for 49th place with 80.
The second and final day of the Ted Barclay Invitational is tomorrow, Sunday, August 31, with the round expected to begin at 9 a.m.
Pitt-Bradford Invitational
The rest of Penn State Altoona's roster competed in the Pitt-Bradford Invitational, with the 'B' team scoring 314 on the par 71 course to come in fourth place and the 'C' team compiling a score of 330 to tie for 11th.
Hobart College won the invitational with 298, and host school Pitt-Bradford was the runner-up with 300. Pitt-Greensburg came in third place with 303.
Austin Duelley (Austin, TX/Lake Travis) and Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) had the low scores for the Lions' 'B' team, each shooting 77 to tie for 14th place out of 72 individuals in the tournament. Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) tied for 19th place by shooting 78.
Also in the lineup for the 'B' team were Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) and Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township), and both players carded an 82 to tie for 41st place.
For the 'C' team, Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) tied for 33rd place individually with an 81. Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) tied for 41st place with matching scores of 82.
Roger Royer (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg Community) and Luke Repko (Cresson, PA/Bishop Carroll) rounded out the 'C' team, with Royer shooting 85 to tie for 56th and Repko tying for 61st with a score of 87.
