Bruce Ties for Second, Lions Finish Sixth at Northeast Elite
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn State Altoona junior Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) tied for second place on the player leaderboard by the conclusion of the two-day Northeast Elite tournament, which wrapped up Monday at Williamsport Country Club.
Penn State Altoona, which co-hosted the tournament with Penn College on Sunday and Monday, finished the event in sixth place out of 16 teams. In Monday's round, the Lions duplicated their score from day one by again shooting 298 as a team and recording a total score of 596.
The University of Rochester won the event with a two-day score of 577. Gettysburg College was the runner-up with 578, McDaniel College placed third with 580, and Dickinson College and York College (Pa.) tied for fourth with matching scores of 595.
Bruce shot 2-under on the par 71 course in Monday's round, with his score of 69 tying for the third-lowest in a round in Penn State Altoona men's golf history. The junior totaled 142 strokes in two days to share runner-up status with Gettysburg's Daniel Casanta among a field of 90 individuals.
Meanwhile, Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) tied for ninth place individually with a two-round score of 145, including shooting a 2-over par 73 on Monday. Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) tied for 38th place with 153, after he carded 78 in round two. Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) shot 78 Monday to compile a two-day score of 160, which put him in a tie for 73rd place.
In addition to Penn State Altoona's starting five, Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Arthur Franciosa Jr. (Purchase, NY/Harrison) competed both days for the Lions as individuals. Batrus scored a 3-over par 74 on Monday, tallying 155 shots in two days to tie for 52nd place. Franciosa shot 82 in Monday's action to finish with a total score of 157, tying him for 63rd place.
Next, the Lions golf team will look ahead to its first home men's tournament of the fall on Sunday, October 5 and Monday, October 6, when Penn State Altoona will host the Sinking Valley Collegiate Classic on its home course, Sinking Valley Country Club.
