Lions Open Home Tourney in Third Place
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team teed off day one of its home invitational on Sunday at Sinking Valley Country Club, competing in the first round of the Sinking Valley Collegiate Classic.
The Lions 'A' team shot 303 on the par 70 course, finishing the day in third place out of 20 squads.
Franklin & Marshall College ended the round in the top spot on the team leaderboard with a score of 299, while Mount Aloysius College was in second with 302.
Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) finished Sunday's round in a tie for second place out of 106 individuals, firing 3-over par with a 73. Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) was tied for 10th place after carding a 5-over par 75, and Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) was tied for 15th with a 6-over 76.
Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) tied for 38th place after shooting 79, and Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) rounded out Penn State Altoona's 'A' squad with an 84 to tie for 64th place.
Meanwhile, the Lions' 'B' team also had a strong showing, finishing Sunday's round in fourth place with a team score of 306.
Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) scored a 5-over par 75, tying for 10th place by round's end. Austin Duelley (Austin, TX/Lake Travis), Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin), and Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) each finished the day 7-over par, carding matching scores of 77 to tie for 22nd place individually. Arthur Franciosa Jr. (Purchase, NY/Harrison) finished the round in a tie for 43rd place with a score of 80.
Additionally, Penn State Altoona played its 'C' team, which compiled a score of 339 to come in 17th place by the conclusion of the round.
Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) had the top score for the 'C' squad, shooting 83 to finish the day in a tie for 60th place. Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) carded 84 to tie for 64th place, and Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) and Luke Repko (Cresson, PA/Bishop Carroll) each shot 86 to tie for 71st place. Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) scored a 92, tying for 94th place.
Individually, Roger Royer (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg Community) carded an 86 to end the round in 71st place.
Penn State Altoona men's golf returns to the course tomorrow, Monday, October 6, for the second and final day of the Sinking Valley Collegiate Classic. The round's shotgun start is slated for 9 a.m.
