Men’s Golf Holds Top Spot in Day One of AMCCs

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Through the opening round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships on Monday at Toftrees Golf Resort, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team held down first place on the team leaderboard.

The Lions shot 307 on the par 72 Toftrees course, steadily inching up the leaderboard throughout Monday's round to finish the day in first place out of eight AMCC teams. Mount Aloysius College was close behind with 311 for second place, and Pitt-Bradford ended the day in third place with 314.

Pitt-Greensburg (318), Penn State Behrend (321), Hilbert College (365), La Roche University (365), and Carlow University (396) rounded out the AMCC pack.

Three of the Lions' starting five finished among the top eight scores in Monday's round.

Penn State Altoona's Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) had his team's low score, tying for first place out of 40 on the individual leaderboard after firing a 2-over par 74. Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) ended the day in a tie for sixth place, scoring 4-over par with a 76. Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) was eighth by the day's end, shooting 5-over par with a 77.

Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) tied for 14th place in the round with a score of 80, and Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) was in 28th with 86.

The second and final day of the AMCC Championships is tomorrow, Tuesday, October 14. The round gets underway at 9 a.m., with the Lions' tee times scheduled to begin at 10:40 a.m.

Penn State Altoona will look to nail down its 10th-ever AMCC title, which would also be the team's fifth in a row. A conference championship victory would also give the Lions the league's automatic bid to compete in May's NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, which would represent the program's ninth-ever NCAA postseason appearance.
