Men’s Swimming Stays in Second after Third Day of AMCCs
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona men's swimming team continued its pursuit of a league championship on Friday, when the Lions competed in day three of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center.
The Lions finished Friday's action in second place out of four AMCC teams with a score of 249 points.
SUNY Cortland was the top overall team in the joint AMCC-SUNYAC standings with 567 points. Penn State Behrend was second overall and first in the AMCC with 469 points, Alfred State College held third place with 173.5 points, and Pitt-Bradford was in fourth with 108 points.
Caden Traggiai (Sarver, PA/Knoch) started Penn State Altoona's night in the 'A' final for the 400 Yard IM, in which he placed third in the AMCC and fourth overall after recording a time of 4:20.60.
Next, the Lions had three swimmers qualify for the 100 Yard Butterfly finals, including two in the 'A' cut. In the 'A' final, Hunter McMullen (Colver, PA/Central Cambria) won first place in the AMCC and third in the overall standings after clocking in at 51.17. That time broke McMullen's own team record, 51.68, which he set in that swim during the Malone Invitational this past November 22.
Benjamin Dotts (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) also swam in the 'A' final of the 100 Yard Butterfly and took third place in the AMCC and seventh overall. In the 'B' final, Lincoln Johnson (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) recorded a time of 53.36 to finish in fifth place in the AMCC and 11th overall.
Adam Dotts (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) qualified for the 'B' final of the next swim, the 200 Yard Freestyle, and won the 'B' cut with a time of 1:47.16 to earn AMCC runner-up status and take ninth place overall.
In the 100 Yard Backstroke 'A' final, Eugene Heyman (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) clinched third place in the AMCC and eighth overall after clocking in with a time of 53.99.
Friday's last event was the 400 Yard Medley Relay. In the 'A' final, the group of Heyman, Benjamin Dotts, McMullen, and Traggiai totaled a time of 3:37.32 to place second in the AMCC and sixth overall. In the 'B' final, Andrew Miller (Easton, PA/Easton), Brian Nguyen (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township), Johnson, and Joseph Fazio (Conshohocken, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) came together for a time of 3:45.96 to come sixth in the AMCC.
The fourth and final day of the AMCC Championships is tomorrow, Saturday, February 22. The day's preliminaries start at 10 a.m., and the last finals session of the week begins at 5:30 p.m., preceded by a brief ceremony recognizing the senior swimmers from all of the participating teams.
On the schedule for Saturday are the 1,650 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Breaststroke, 200 Yard Butterfly, and 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The meet's awards ceremony will commence after the final event of the night.
