Softball Wins in Day Two, Advances to AMCC Championship

DUBOIS, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona softball team won both of their games on their second day of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship tournament at Rose & Dennis Heindl Memorial Field.

Penn State Altoona (23-15) faced Pitt Bradford (15-23) in an elimination game Friday afternoon, rolling past the Panthers 11-3 to move on to face Mount Aloysius College.

Against Mount Aloysius (15-25), the Lions took revenge for yesterday's playoff loss. The Lions scored an early two runs before adding to their lead late in the game to win 6-1.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 11, Pitt Bradford 3 (Final/5 Innings)

The Lions fought against the Panthers and the weather, scoring four runs after a weather delay as they got the win in five innings.

During the Lions' game, Penn State Altoona's Gracie Wilt (Altoona, PA/Altoona) set a new team single-season record for stolen bases. Wilt's stolen base in the second inning against the Panthers helped her pass former Lion Haley Giedroc's previous record of 19 stolen bases during the 2018 season, and Wilt now owns the new single-season record.

Wilt and Alexa Baney (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) were both 2-for-3, and each scored two runs. Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) was 1-for-2, scoring three runs, stealing one base, and having an RBI. Kendal Wadsworth (Johnstown, PA/Richland) and Olivia Werkheiser (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) both went 1-for-3, and each scored one run. Werkheiser also hit a double.

Madison Kennedy (Williamsburg, PA/Central) hit a perfect 2-for-2.

Riley Best (Coalport, PA/Glendale) hit a perfect 3-for-3 in the victory, hitting a home run, scoring two runs, and having eight RBI. Best's eight RBI ties for the second most RBI in a single game in program history.

On the mound, Josselyn Nau (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) pitched a complete game and earned her 11th win of the season. She yielded only four hits and three runs, while striking out one batter.

Penn State Altoona's domination started early, scoring four runs off two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Wilt and Baney scored the first runs of the game courtesy of a single by Best. The Lions then scored two more runs while the bases were loaded. Storm scored the first run off a walk by Lauren Davidson (Clearfield, PA/DuBois Central Catholic). The next run came after a sacrifice fly by Allison Beeman (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone).

The Lions kept the Panthers off base in the top of the second, before extending their lead in the bottom of the inning. Best set up Wilt and Storm with a single to make it 6-0 going into the top of the third inning.

The Panthers tried to get themselves back into the game in the top of the third inning, scoring one run off one hit. The Lions responded though, getting five hits and scoring five runs in the bottom of the third. Following a single by Storm, Wadsworth ran home to score the Lions' seventh run of the game. Penn State Altoona wouldn't let a weather delay interrupt their stride with Best hitting her ninth home run of the season for the Lions to take an 11-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, Pitt Bradford scored two runs to cut Penn State Altoona's lead to eight.

The Lions would not be as clinical in the bottom of the fourth, only getting two hits and no runs to bring up the fifth inning.

The Lions held the Panthers to one walk and no hits in the top of the fifth as they powered on for the 11-3 victory.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 6, Mount Aloysius 1

Penn State Altoona got their revenge in their second game of the day. After a quick start by the Lions, there would be a lull in the scoring before a flurry of runs at the end of the game led to the Lions winning by five runs.

In the victory, Karli Storm set the Penn State Altoona softball team's single-season record for runs scored when she crossed home plate in the fifth inning. Her 47th run of the season helped her pass the previous record of 46, which was set by former Lions catcher Erin Cline during the 2010 season.

Storm went 3-for-4 in hitting, with a double and one runs scored. Wilt hit 2-for-4, having one steal, a double, and two runs scored. Best hit 1-for-3 with a steal and a run scored. Kennedy hit 2-for-4, having a double, one run scored, and four RBI.

Best started on the mound and got her fifth win. Best conceded three hits and one run. Kennedy pitched two innings in relief, only conceding one hit.

The Lions started the bottom of the first inning brightly, getting four hits and two runs. A single from Kennedy allowed Wilt and Baney to score the first runs of the game.

The next three innings were scoreless as both outfields took center stage.

The scoreless run was broken in the top of the fifth inning when Hanna Stedman scored for the Mounties off an Ava Doyle triple.

The Lions fired back in the bottom of fifth inning, scoring three runs to extend their lead to 5-1. A double from Kennedy enabled Best and Storm to score. Kennedy scored a run of her own after a Wadsworth single.

Penn State Altoona scored a final run in the bottom of the sixth as Wilt ran home following a hit from Kennedy.

The Lions kept the Mounties out in the top of the seventh to hold on for the six-run win.

Now, Penn State Altoona will face Penn State Behrend for the conference title tomorrow, Sunday, May 9. The Lions will be in search of their fourth-ever AMCC Championship win, which would lead to an NCAA postseason appearance next week. To achieve the feat, Penn State Altoona will need to defeat Penn State Behrend twice, as Behrend has not yet suffered a loss in the double-elimination tournament.
