Men’s Wrestling Takes Ninth at Blue Jay Classic

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's wrestling team hit the road Saturday to compete in Elizabethtown College's Blue Jay Classic, and the Lions finished the day with a ninth-place finish in the open event.

Penn State Altoona scored four points as a team to settle into ninth place out of 10 teams. Host Elizabethtown won the day with 181.5 points, Wilkes University was the runner-up with 152.5, and Albright College rounded out the top three spots with 139.5.

Three Lion wrestlers competed in the open, with Tammar Reza (Montgomery, NJ/Montgomery) wrestling at 125, Gonzalo Santana Hernandez (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) wrestling at 165, and Andrew Weaver (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) competing at 174.

Reza started with a loss to McDaniel College's Isaiah Brewster, going down by fall in 3:57. His day ended upon his second loss in the bracket, when the University of Scranton's Joseph Cappello took him down in 1:31.

Hernandez's first match of the 165 bracket was a loss to Scranton's Ethan Wilson, who prevailed in one minute. After a bye, Hernandez faced off against Scranton's Jake Rudy and suffered another loss by fall, going down in 2:53.

Weaver started his run in the 174 bracket with a loss to Cortland State's Luke Chernaski, who posted a win by decision, 13-6. Weaver bounced back, however, earning a 9-1 major decision victory over Cortland State's Thomas Mancini to stay alive and advance to the next round. In his next bout, Weaver won 9-3 in 2:19 over McDaniel's Manny Rodrigues, then received a bye in the next round. Weaver's day came to an end with a tight loss to Elizabethtown's Gavin Fehr, who defeated Weaver by decision, 10-9.

The Penn State Altoona men's wrestling team returns to action on Thursday, December 11, when the Lions will travel to Williamsport to face Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn College in a dual meet starting at 7 p.m.
