Lady Lions Edged 3-2 by Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's soccer came out on the wrong end of a one-goal game on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-2 at non-conference opponent Lycoming College.

Shoshana Mahoney (Sweet Valley, PA/Lake-Lehman) scored two goals for Penn State Altoona (1-4), and Kierra Irwin (Altoona, PA/Altoona) finished with two assists. Sydney Emershaw (Dallas, PA/Dallas) made eight saves in goal for the Lady Lions.

Mahoney gave Penn State Altoona a 1-0 lead at 5:24, firing a shot from 15 yards out into the bottom left corner of the net to score her fourth goal of the season.

But Lycoming (2-4) was able to tie the game in the latter stages of the first half. Jordan Lazarich's through ball connected with Mackaella Goodwin, who scored to make it 1-1 at 34:43.

Shortly after halftime, the home team struck again to take the lead. Elle Sarracco's shot was deflected and found Lazarich, who sent the ball into the open net to give the Warriors a 2-1 advantage at the 48:35 mark.

Sarracco and Lazarich teamed up on Lycoming's next goal to give their team a two-goal lead. Lazarich's cross into the box came to Sarracco, whose shot from six yards out found the back of the net at 57:16 to make it 3-1.

Penn State Altoona cut its deficit to one at 69:26 on Mahoney's breakaway goal, her team-best fifth tally of the season.

But the Lady Lions were unable to grab the tying goal, losing by one score.

Lycoming held a 19-16 advantage over Penn State Altoona in total shots, including a narrow 11-10 lead in shots on goal. The Warriors also led 4-1 in corner kicks.

Lady Lions soccer continues its non-conference road trip tomorrow, Sunday, September 17 when they take on Penn College at 12:00 p.m.

Notes: With her two goals today, Lady Lions senior forward Mahoney moved into third place on the Penn State Altoona women's soccer team's all-time goals scored list, and she also ascended into sixth place on the program's all-time points list. Mahoney has scored 25 goals in her career and has 53 points.
