Mahoney's Goals Help Lady Lions Top Hilbert 2-1

HAMBURG, N.Y. - Penn State Altoona senior forward Shoshana Mahoney (Sweet Valley, PA/Lake-Lehman) scored two goals to propel the Lady Lions soccer team past its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Hilbert College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field.

Mahoney recorded her team-best ninth and tenth goals of the season in the win for the Lady Lions (4-7, 2-1 AMCC). Sydney Emershaw (Dallas, PA/Dallas) made eight saves to pick up the victory in goal.

Penn State Altoona wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, jumping ahead 1-0 at the 6:03 mark. Gabby Stauffer (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Central Catholic) sent a corner kick into the box, and Mahoney fired a hard shot into the lower left corner of the net to give her team the lead.

Hilbert (1-7-1, 1-2 AMCC) tied the score 1-1 at 25:15, when Brittany Profetta crossed a pass to Emily Gawlak, whose hard shot found the bottom left corner of the goal to knot the score.

But the Lady Lions were able to reestablish their lead before halftime. Kierra Irwin (Altoona, PA/Altoona) passed the ball to Mahoney, whose hard shot into the top right corner of the goal gave Penn State Altoona a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Lions maintained their lead in the second half, keeping Hilbert off of the board to walk away with a one-goal conference win.

Penn State Altoona posted big advantages over Hilbert in shots, as the Lady Lions had a 35-15 lead over the Lady Hawks in total shots attempted and a 20-9 lead in shots on goal. Penn State Altoona also led 6-4 in corner kicks.

Haley Giedroc (Howard, PA/Bald Eagle) led all players in the game with six shots on goal. Stauffer had five shots on goal, and Irwin and Mahoney each finished with four shots on goal.
