Women’s Swimming Defeats Presidents in Season Opener

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team began its 2024-25 season with a victory, as the Lions topped non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College 127-93 in a dual meet at the Henry Memorial Natatorium on Friday night.

Penn State Altoona recorded seven first places in the meet, including two individual wins from Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights) to help lead the way.

Petry placed first in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:09.76, and she later won the 500 Yard Freestyle after clocking in at 5:50.59.

The Lions opened the meet by taking first place in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, in which McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin), Ayva Harris (Monroeville, PA/Gateway), Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax), and Emma Fraundorfer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) came together for a time of 2:01.44.

Alexis Buchala (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) won the first individual swim of the women's meet, when she clocked in at 12:09.76 to seal first place in the 1000 Yard Freestyle.

Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) prevailed in the 200 Yard IM, finishing in 2:25.10 to come in first place. Harris posted a triumph in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, winning the swim by a margin of 0.02 seconds to take first with a time of 1:16.67.

The Lions wrapped up their successful night by placing first in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, as Petry, Buchala, Ava Monborne (Ebensburg, PA/Central Cambria), and Coleman combined for a time of 1:52.23 to win the event.

Next up, the Penn State Altoona women's swimming team heads to Latrobe, Pa., to face non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College in a dual meet on Friday, October 25, at 6 p.m.
