Women’s Swimming in Third Through Three Days at AMCCs
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Penn State Altoona women's swimming continued postseason tournament action on Friday, as the Lions competed in the third day of this week's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center.
By the conclusion of Friday night's finals session, Penn State Altoona held third place out of four AMCC teams with a score of 185 points.
Penn State Behrend was atop the AMCC pack with 457 points, holding second place in the overall AMCC-SUNYAC standings. Alfred State College was second in the AMCC with 351, and Pitt-Bradford was fourth with 70. SUNY-Cortland ended Friday in first place overall with 627 points.
The Lions' night opened with the 400 Yard IM, in which Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) and Alexis Buchala (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) each qualified for the 'B' cut final. Coleman won the 'B' race with a time of 5:03.76, taking fourth place in the AMCC and ninth overall, while Buchala finished in 5:08.64 to nab sixth in the AMCC and 11th overall.
Next was the 100 Yard Butterfly. Emma Fraundorfer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax) both competed in the 'B' final, with Fraundorfer clocking in at 1:05.56 for fifth in the AMCC and Sponsler posting a time of 1:06.66 to take seventh in the conference.
The Lions had two swimmers qualify for the 100 Yard Breaststroke. In the 'A' cut, Ayva Harris (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) earned third place in the AMCC and sixth overall after finishing in 1:11.81. In the 'B' final, Hailey Toth (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) secured sixth place in the AMCC and 13th overall with a time of 1:13.94.
The 100 Yard Backstroke was the next swim, and Penn State Altoona had three swimmers compete in the finals. In the 'A' cut, McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) placed fourth in the AMCC and eighth overall with a time of 1:04.72. Julia Daley (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) and Sponsler both made the 'B' final, with Daley recording a time of 1:05.62 to take sixth in the AMCC and Sponsler finishing in 1:06.07 to come in seventh in the conference.
The Lions concluded Friday's action in the 400 Yard Medley Relay. In the 'A' final of that event, the team of Holl, Harris, Fraundorfer, and Coleman combined for a time of 4:21.54 to place third in the AMCC and seventh overall. In the 'B' final, Daley, Toth, Sponsler, and Claire Smith (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) finished with a total time of 4:26.19 to take fifth in the conference and 13th overall.
Penn State Altoona women's swimming wraps up the meet tomorrow, Saturday, February 22, in the fourth and final day of the AMCC Championships. The day's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., and the last finals session of the week is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. A senior ceremony recognizing senior swimmers from all of the meet's teams will precede the finals.
On Saturday's schedule are the 1,650 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Breaststroke, 200 Yard Butterly, and 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The meet's awards ceremony will be held after the evening's events.
