Women's Swimming Remains Ninth After Two Days at Malone Invite

CANTON, Ohio - After day two of the Malone University Invitational on Friday, the Penn State Altoona women's swimming team found itself in ninth place out of 15 teams. 

The Lions added 131 points to their team total in Friday night's finals session in the Branin Natatorium, finishing the day with 227 points. Division II Gannon University held the top spot on the team leaderboard with 1,088 points, while Bethel University (Indiana) was in second place with 974 points. 

The Lions opened Thursday evening's finals session with 14th and 20th overall place finishes in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, which the team of Victoria Oldford (Bucks County, PA/Palisades), Claire Smith (Hellertown, PA / Saucon Valley), Drew Porter (Centreville, VA/Centreville), and Paige Goray (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) combined for a time of 1:57.55 in the 'A' finals and the team of Julia Daley (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy), Téah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax), Isabella Rhoades (Tyrone, PA / Tyrone), and Sophia Cowher (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) combined for a time of 2:09.64 in the 'B' finals.   

Smith followed that up by taking 19th place in the 200 Yard Freestyle, finishing in 2:06.95 while competing in the 'C' final of that swim.  

Porter competed in the 'A' finals of the 400 Yard IM, taking 8th place overall with a time of 5:09.35. Alexis Buchala (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) also competed in the 400 Yard IM, clocking a time of 5:15.38 to finish in 11th place in the 'B' finals.  

Another event Sponsler competed in was the 'C' final of the 100 Yard Butterfly, where she clocked a time of 1:09.21 to finish in 24th place.  

Oldford competed in the 'B' finals of the 100 Yard Breaststroke, where she finished in 13th place with a time of 1:10.79. Oldford also set a new Penn State Altoona record in that swim during Friday morning's preliminaries session, in which she recorded a time of 1:09.20 to take down the previous 100 Yard Breaststroke record of 1:09.90.

Goray competed in the 100 Yard Backstroke, qualifying for the 'C' finals, where she clocked a time of 1:06.25 to finish in 21st place.  

In the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, the team of Anna Heller (Chesapeake, VA/Huntingdon), Ashley Moretz (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), Buchala, and Smith competed in the 'A' finals, finishing in 11th place with a time of 8:42.50.  

Penn State Altoona women's swimming heads into the third and final day of the Malone Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, November 23. The last day's round of preliminaries is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., with the finals session set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
