Women's Swimming Places Ninth to Finish Malone Invite
CANTON, Ohio - After the final day of the Malone University Invitational on Saturday, the Penn State Altoona women's swimming team found itself in ninth place out of 351 teams.
The Lions added 124 points to their team total in Friday night's finals session in the Branin Natatorium, finishing the day with 351 points. Division II Gannon University held the top spot on the team leaderboard with 1,552 points, while Bethel University (Indiana) was in second place with 1,490 points.
Penn State Altoona started Saturday's finals by nabbing three of the top 20 places in the 1,650 Yard Freestyle. Anna Heller (Chesapeake, VA/Huntingdon) came in 12th with a time of 19:22.52, Ashley Moretz (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) came in 17th with a time of 20:07.28, and Claire Smith (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) came in 18th with a time of 20:13.96.
In the next swim, Drew Porter (Centreville, VA/Centreville) led the way by coming in 12th place with a time of 2:18.06 after qualifying for the 'B' final. Téah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax) swam in 'C' final and placed 22nd with a time of 2:29.10.
In the 200 Yard Breaststroke, Victoria Oldford (Bucks County, PA/Palisades) competed in the 'B' final, setting a new record of 2:33.03, breaking the old record of 2:33.38. With this time, Oldford placed ninth overall.
Alexis Buchala (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) qualified for the 'B' final of the 200 Yard Butterfly, where she clocked a time of 2:37.62 to finish in 12th place.
The Lions had two teams competing in the 400 Yard Freestyle. The team of Oldford, Porter, Smith, and Paige Goray (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) competed in the 'A' final, where they placed 14th with a time of 3:55.43. The team of Heller, Moretz, Buchala, and Julia Daley (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) competed in the 'B' final, where they placed 18th with a time of 4:09.21.
Next up, Penn State Altoona men's swimming will travel to compete against Lycoming and King's College (Pa.) on Saturday, December 6, in a 1:00 p.m. meet.
