Women's Swimming Defeated by Bearcats

LATROBE, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team returned from a mid-season break with an away meet against Saint Vincent Saturday afternoon, when the Lions suffered a 167-84 loss to the Bearcats. 

Penn State Altoona posted three individual wins during the meet from Anna Heller (Chesapeake, VA/Huntingdon), Victoria Oldford (Bucks County, PA/Palisades), and Drew Porter (Centreville, VA/Centreville).  

The Lions began the meet with a third-place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, in which the team of Porter, Oldford, Téah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax), and Claire Smith (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) posted a time of 2:03.06 to finish on the podium. 

Heller's victory of the day came in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, where she placed first with a time of 11:54.52.  

The Lions had three swimmers competing in the 200 Yard Freestyle. Smith finished third with a time of 2:10.44; Ashley Moretz (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) finished fourth with a time of 2:27.23; and Sophia Cowher (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) finished fifth with a time of 2:32.75. 

In the 100 Yard Backstroke, Porter, Julia Daley (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy), and Sponsler competed. Porter had a time of 1:05.27 to finish second, Daley had a time of 1:13.23 to finish fourth, and Sponsler had a time of 1:13.56 to finish fifth.  

Oldford's victory came in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, where she finished first with a time of 1:13.45. Isabella Rhoades (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) also competed in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, finishing fourth with a time of 1:30.05.  

Alexis Buchala (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) competed in the 200 Yard Butterfly, where she clocked a time of 2:46.88 to finish third.  

Daley competed for the Lions in the 50 Yard Freestyle, where she placed fourth after clocking a time of 29.76. In the 100 Yard Freestyle, Heller finished in second place, clocking in at 1:01.77. 

Porter and Sponsler both finished on the podium for the 200 Yard Backstroke, with Porter finishing second and Sponsler third. Porter clocked a time of 2:25.52 and Sponsler clocked a time of 2:39.31. 

Oldford was the lone competitor for the Lions in the 200 Yard Breaststroke, finishing second with a time of 2:41.12.  

The Lions had two swimmers competing in the 500 Yard Freestyle. Buchala clocked a time of 5:57.39 to finish third and Smith clocked a time of 5:58.16 to finish fourth.  

Sponsler competed for the Lions in 100 Yard Butterfly, finishing third with a time of 1:17.53. 

Porter's victory in the meet came in the 200 Yard Individual Medley, when she finished first with a time of 2:25.70. Buchala and Rhoades also competed in the 200 Yard Individual Medley, with Buchala finishing third with a time of 2:35.77 and Rhoades finishing fifth with a time of 2:50.29.  

The Lions concluded the meet with a third-place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, as Smith, Heller, Daley, and Buchala combined for a time of 1:55.56. 

In their next meet, the Penn State Altoona women's swimming team will host Juniata College and Elizabethtown College on January 24 at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the meet, the Lions will hold their Senior Day ceremony to honor their two senior swimmers: Isabella Rhoades and Téah Sponsler.
