Women's Swimming Posts 127-50 Win Against Panthers
BRADFORD, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team competed in their final meet before the SUNYAC Championships Saturday afternoon, traveling to face conference opponents Pitt Bradford.
Penn State Altoona ended the day on a positive note, beating Pitt Bradford 127-50. In the victory, the Lions recorded eight first-place finishes.
Penn State Altoona opened the meet in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, where Paige Goray (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek), Victoria Oldford (Bucks County, PA/Palisades), Sophia Cowher (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone), and Anna Heller (Chesapeake, VA/Huntingdon) led the way for the Lions with a second-place finish with a time of 2:09.48. Téah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax), Isabella Rhoades (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone), Drew Porter (Centreville, VA/Centreville), and Claire Smith (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) came together for a time of 2:13.25 for third place.
The Lions got their first win in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, as Alexis Buchala (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) clocked a time of 12:06.59 to finish first. Ashley Moretz (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) also competed in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, placing second with a time of 12:34.72.
Following Buchala's win, Heller got a win in the 200 Yard Freestyle, placing first after finishing in 2:11.39. Cowher was third in the 200 Yard Freestyle after finishing in 2:33.24.
The Lions got a third-straight first-place finish in the 50 Yard Freestyle after Goray finished in 28.79. Sponsler and Daley also competed, with Sponsler finishing second with a time of 29.59 and Daley finishing third with a time of 29.60.
Oldford got her first win of the meet in the 200 Yard Individual Medley, finishing as the top finisher after clocking a time of 2:35.09. Also competing in the 200 Yard Individual Medley was Rhoades, who finished third after finishing in 2:53.27.
The Lions had three competitors in the 100 Yard Butterfly, with Oldford, Buchala, and Sponsler all competing. Oldford finished first with a time of 1:11.09; Buchala finished second with a time of 1:13.10, and Sponsler finished third with a time of 1:13.15.
In the 100 Yard Freestyle, Heller and Cowher both competed. Heller finished runner-up after clocking a time of 1:01.43, while Cowher finished third after clocking a time of 1:11.34.
Goray, Daley, and Moretz all swam for the 100 Yard Backstroke. Goray finished runner-up with a time of 1:10.25; Daley finished third with a time of 1:14.13, and Moretz finished fourth with a time of 1:17.40.
Smith and Porter competed in the 500 Yard Freestyle, with both finishing on the podium. Smith clocked a time of 5:50.00 to finish first, while Porter clocked a time of 6:05.23 to finish second.
The Lions had two swimmers in the pool for the 100 Yard Breaststroke as Porter and Rhoades both competed. Porter was the top finisher clocking in at 1:20.84. Rhoades finished third clocking in at 1:30.32.
The team of Smith, Daley, Moretz, and Buchala finished first in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, combining for a total time of 1:55.04.
Up next, the Penn State Altoona women's swimming team will travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to compete in the SUNYAC Championships on February 18 through February 21.
