Women’s Swimming Finishes Fifth at SUNYAC Championships
BUFFALO, N.Y. – After the fourth and final day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, Penn State Altoona women's swimming settled into fifth place out of nine teams.
The Lions finished the four-day championship meet with 318 points, ranking ahead of SUNY New Paltz (256), SUNY Potsdam (187), SUNY Fredonia (139), and Pitt-Bradford (110) in the team standings.
SUNY Cortland was crowned the champion with 979 points, and Penn State Behrend was the runner-up with 750 points. SUNY Oswego (687) and SUNY Oneonta (326) rounded out the top four places.
The Lions' night began with a record-setting performance by Anna Heller (Chesapeake, VA/Huntingdon) in the 1,650 Yard Freestyle. Heller took sixth place in the race with a time of 18:53.77, setting a new Penn State Altoona women's swimming record by cruising past the previous time of 19:19.39, which was set by former Lion Sarah Petry.
Meanwhile, Claire Smith (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) and Ashley Moretz (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) placed 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 1,650 Yard Freestyle by recording times of 20:11.32 and 20:30.67.
Penn State Altoona had a pair of swimmers qualify for the 'B' final in the next event, the 200 Yard Backstroke. Drew Porter (Centreville, VA/Centreville) won the 'B' cut and placed ninth overall with a time of 2:19.64, while Paige Goray (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) finished close behind with a time of 2:22.40 for 10th place.
Victoria Oldford (Bucks County, PA/Palisades) came a fraction of a second away from breaking her own team record in the next swim, the 200 Yard Breaststroke. Oldford qualified for the 'A' final and placed fifth with a time of 2:33.46, just shy of the team record of 2:33.03 that Oldford herself set this past November.
In the 'B' final of the next event, the 200 Yard Butterfly, Alexis Buchala (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) earned 11th place overall after recording a time of 2:35.30.
In the last event of the championships, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, Penn State Altoona had two scoring teams. In the 'A' final, Heller, Smith, Porter, and Oldford came together for a time of 3:55.89 to place sixth. In the 'B' cut, the team of Moretz, Julia Daley (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy), Buchala, and Sophia Cowher (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) took 13th place overall after finishing in 4:12.83.
