ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's tennis earned its second Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory of the season on Friday, when the Lady Lions battled to an 8-1 win over conference foe Penn State Behrend at the Adler Tennis Courts.
Despite the seven-point margin of victory, the event featured plenty of tightly-contested matches, including multiple tiebreakers and back-and-forth play.
Penn State Altoona (3-5, 2-3 AMCC) put itself in a good position by sweeping doubles. In No. 1 doubles, Brayley Lewis (Roaring Spring, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle)/Annie Ruggles (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) won 8-4. In the No. 2 doubles match, Victoria Acker (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria)/Sophia Girol (South Park, PA/South Park) picked up an 8-2 victory. In the No. 3 match, Grace Butz (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg)/Katie Kruza (York, PA/Central York) pulled out an 8-7 (8-6) win for the duo's first doubles victory together this season.
In singles, the Lady Lions won five out of six over Penn State Behrend (1-4, 1-3 AMCC) to wrap up the victory.
Lewis prevailed 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in No. 1 singles. With the win, Lewis moved into sole possession of second place on the Penn State Altoona women's tennis program's all-time wins list with 23.
Acker followed with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory in the No. 2 singles match, and Girol was able to grind out a 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 12-10 win in the No. 4 spot for her team-leading fourth singles victory of the season. Butz won 6-3, 2-6, 10-2 in No. 5 singles, and Kruza rounded things out by notching her first collegiate singles win, topping her opponent 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) in the No. 6 match.
Now with two wins in a row, the Penn State Altoona women's tennis team will look to keep the momentum going in its next match, which is set for Tuesday, September 24 against non-conference opponent Juniata College. The match will be hosted at the Adler Tennis Courts with a start time of 5:00 p.m.
