Women’s Wrestling Returns to Action in Collegiate State Championships
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's wrestling team returned to action for the first time this semester, as the Lions competed in the Pennsylvania Women's Collegiate State Championships on Sunday, hosted by East Stroudsburg University in its Koehler Fieldhouse.
Three wrestlers took to the mats for Penn State Altoona during Sunday's tournament. Angelina Grieb (Julian, PA/Bald Eagle) and Camryn Steinbuch (Bedford, PA/Bedford) each competed in the 160 bracket, and Aja'nai Jumper (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) wrestled in the 207 bracket, where she had the highlight of the Lions' day by finishing in fifth place.
Grieb started her day with a loss, as York College's Kylie Monroe defeated her 8-0 by fall in the round-of-16 match. Dropping to the consolation bracket, Grieb had a bye in the next round before suffering a 5-1 loss by fall to East Stroudsburg's Jade Huerta.
Steinbuch suffered a loss in her first match to York's Kaylyn Adair, who posted a 6-1 victory by fall. Steinbuch also had a bye in the next round, after dropping to the 160 consolation bracket, then lost 6-0 by fall to Muhlenberg University's Kelsey Gelb.
Jumper started Sunday's action with a close loss, going down 4-3 by fall to Alvernia University's Peyton Fries in the quarterfinal round of the 207 bracket. After moving down to the consolation bracket, Jumper bounced back to rally past Waynesburg University's Ja'Khia Matthews for a 6-5 win. Jumper took a defeat in the consolation semifinal round, where she lost a 6-4 decision to Gannon University's Christina Chavez. But Jumper finished her day on a high note, posting her second comeback win of the tournament and defeating Ursinus College's Evette Colon by fall in the fifth place bout.
At the conclusion of the tournament, the Lions tied for ninth place out of 11 competing teams with a score of six points.
Next up, Penn State Altoona women's wrestling will compete in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Invitational on Saturday, February 8, hosted by Hiram College.
