Lions Take Eighth at Denison Invitational
GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team capped off its season-opening weekend on Sunday in day two of the Ted Barclay Invitational, hosted by Denison University at Denison Golf Club.
After compiling a team score of 303 in Saturday's round, the Lions shot 310 as a team on Sunday at the par 71 course. Penn State Altoona's two-round combined score of 613 put it in eighth place out of 11 teams.
John Carroll University won the tournament with a two-day score of 574, while Wittenberg University came second with 579. Otterbein University rounded out the top three spots on the team leaderboard with 583.
Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) was Penn State Altoona's top finisher in the tournament, tying for 11th place out of 67 individuals. He matched his first-round score of 73 on Sunday, shooting 2-over to compile a two-day score of 146.
Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) carded an 80 on Sunday, totaling 155 across two rounds to tie for 40th place individually. Joey Sabol (State College, PA/State College) tied for 49th place, shooting 82 in Sunday's round to finish with a total of 158.
Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) placed 52nd with a combined score of 160, including firing a 75 on Sunday. Arthur Franciosa Jr. (Purchase, NY/Harrison) shot 84 in day two, totaling 163 in two rounds to tie for 56th place.
In addition to Penn State Altoona's starting five, Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) and Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) both had strong performances on the course as individuals. Nusbaum was 3-over par in Sunday's round, shooting 74 to finish with a two-day score of 150 and tie for 29th place. Riscica had Penn State Altoona's low round of the day Sunday, firing a 1-over par 72 and compiling a two-round score of 152 to tie for 34th place individually.
Men's golf returns to action on Tuesday, September 16 when the Lions face off against non-conference rival Westminster College for the fifth annual Hite Cup, a yearly round of match play between the Lions and Titans. This year's edition of the Hite Cup is set to happen at the prestigious Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, with play scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. that day.
