Discipline Costs Lions Against Presidents

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's soccer team would give up a halftime lead to lose 4-2 to Washington & Jefferson at Spring Run Stadium today.

Goals would be exchanged early on with Chris Davis scoring two minutes in to give the Presidents (2-0-1) a 1-0 lead. Penn State Altoona (0-4) would respond as Anderson Portzline (Port Royal, Juniata) drilled the ball into the bottom left corner to make the score 1-1.

Shots would then be exchanged between the two teams until the 37th minute, when Felipe Velarde (Panama/Colegio Real de Panama) would cross the ball to Matias Harte (State College, PA/State College) for his first goal of the season to make it 2-1.

Unfortunately, in the second half, things unraveled for the Lions. Jimmy Gogal would cross the ball across the face of the goal, where it would fall to Owen Rowlands, who would equalize the score at 2-2. In the 71st minute, Penn State Altoona would concede a penalty kick, which Ethan Bowser would dispatch to give the Presidents a 3-2 lead. Eight minutes later, the Lions would concede a free kick in a dangerous position, which the Presidents would capitalize on. Zach Casey crossed the ball into the box, where it would eventually fall to Owen Rowlands, who would push it over the goal line to make the score 4-2.

The game would finish with four Penn State Altoona players and one Washington & Jefferson player receiving yellow cards.

Freshman goalkeeper Alejandro Monjarretz (Managua, Nicaragua, St. Augustine Preparatory School) would get the start and make six saves.

Penn State Altoona men's soccer remains at home for their next game, September 10, where they will face Saint Vincent. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
