Men’s Tennis Blanks Wildcats

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team returned to action on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions posted a 7-0 victory over non-conference opponent Penn College at the Central PA Tennis Center.

Penn State Altoona (5-1) won the first point of the day by sweeping doubles, winning all three matches in convincing fashion. The Lions went on to win all six singles matches, including three that went to tiebreak, to whitewash the Wildcats (1-4).

In doubles, the tandem of Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford)/Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) had a 6-0 win in the No. 1 spot for their first win together. In the No. 2 match, Kadyn Carey (Altoona, PA/Altoona)/Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) picked up their second victory with a 6-0 triumph. At No. 3, Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone)/Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) prevailed 6-1 for their first victory.

Penn State Altoona continued to rack up wins in singles. Hess pulled out a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory in the No. 1 match for his fourth win of the season, and Beard had a 7-5, 6-2 triumph at No. 2 for his fourth win, which clinched the match for the Lions. Newell earned a 7-5, 6-8, 10-8 decision over his opponent at No. 3 for his team-leading fifth victory of the year. Grot came back for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 4 spot for his fourth win, Hibbs won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 for his first triumph of the season, and Carey nabbed his second win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 6 match.

Next up, Penn State Altoona men's tennis gets back to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play on Sunday, March 23, with a home match against Penn State Behrend starting at 11 a.m.
