Women's Soccer Loses in Dramatic Ending

ALFRED, N.Y. - The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team traveled to face the Alfred State Pioneers. Despite keeping the score 1-0 for much of the game, Penn State Altoona would lose 2-1 at Pioneer Stadium.

Freshman Kira Trexler (Martinsburg, PA/Central) started the Lions (4-5-4, 1-2-2 AMCC) off on the right foot, putting the ball in the back of the net from an assist by Rachel Rutkowski (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan). Trexler's goal would be the Lions' lone shot of the half as they went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.

Discipline would the Lions downfall in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Mya Torres (Culpeper, VA/Culpeper County) came out of the goal box to intercept a through ball by the Alfred State (9-4, 5-0 AMCC) offense. Unfortunately for Torres, she was deemed to have handled the ball with her hands, earning a straight red card. With Torres sent off, Jordan Yaletsko (Philadelphia, PA / Philadelphia Academy Charter) would become the Lions' new goalkeeper.

Things would get worse for Penn State Altoona as Alfred State would break through in the 70th minute, scoring to make it 1-1.

Penn State Altoona would see another player sent off in the 76th minute, as Erin McCarrie (Blackwood, NJ / Paul VI) would receive two yellow cards, leaving the Lions with nine players on the pitch.

The final seconds of the match were a frenzy, as Ella Ingraham fired off a shot with five seconds left, forcing Yaletsko to make the save. However, the ball would trickle over the line. There would be some debate as to whether the ball crossed the line before time ran out, but it was determined that the ball crossed the goal line with one second left on the clock.

Yaletsko would get back-to-back yellow cards for her protests, becoming the third Lion to be sent off in the game.

The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team's next game is a home game against Carlow this Wednesday, October 22nd. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
